Denver Colorado Sex Crimes Defense Lawyer

Sex crimes are some of the most serious of all criminal charges.

The mere accusation of a sex crime can be traumatic and emotional and can tarnish someone’s personal life, ruin a career and destroy standing within a community, including friends, family, neighbors or co-workers.

Sex offenses in Colorado carry minimum statutory consequences that include:

  • Colorado Sex offender crimes and registration requirements
  • Sex Offender Intensive Supervision Probation (SOISP) as part of a probation sentence
  • Sexually violent predator (SVP) assessment and findings.

Colorado courts also recognize “indeterminate sentencing” for all sex crimes. This means every sentence is a potential life sentence. A Sex Offender Management Board sets terms and conditions of release, requiring convicted sex offenders to participate in sex offender therapy. Failure to participate can mean no release.

Even upon release, convicted sex offenders generally face a compulsory lifetime sex offender registration, making it difficult to find housing, a job or blend into a neighborhood. Failure to register has become a federal crime.

The seriousness of these consequences requires the most serious defense possible.

In more than 30 years of experience as a criminal defense lawyer, I have worked on some of the most serious sex crime cases in Colorado.

I understand the worry that comes with the allegation of a sex crime, and that’s why I fight vigorously for my clients in state and federal courts throughout Colorado and Wyoming.

If you have been accused or charged of a sex crime, I encourage you to get in touch as soon as possible to begin protecting your rights. Trends in the prosecution of sex crimes
0:07

involve the same trends that we see in
0:10
all criminal prosecutions and that is
0:12

technology even the simplest case now
0:15

has videos audios text messages
0:18

downloading or obtaining access to cell
0:21

phone or phone records and in sex cases
0:24

that’s very typical we also see uh in
0:29

sex cases what’s known as a pretext call
0:32

where the law enforcement will have
0:35

somebody who is alleged to be a victim
0:39

or a complaining witness in a sex case
0:41

have that person call the person who’s
0:44

under investigation and then that phone
0:47

call will be recorded police will be
0:49

part of that phone call so the
0:51

individual might think you know somebody
0:53

who they had a dating relationship with
0:56

is calling them and they’ll have a
0:57

conversation about a date or a sexual
1:00

relationship that they may have had and
1:02

the person who’s calling the complaint
1:04

any witness will be coached by the
1:07

police how to ask questions to this
1:09

individual to try and generate
1:11

incriminating evidence on that phone
1:13

call there’s no requirement that that be
1:17

disclosed to the individual we see that
1:20

as a trend now they’re called pre-text
1:21

calls

sex crime case that I handled
0:08

involved a man in his mid-20s who had
0:12

autism
0:14

and he found himself in a conversation
0:17

online
0:19

with a law enforcement officer from
0:21

Homeland Security
0:23

and the homeland security officer we
0:26

were able to demonstrate to the court
0:28

and to the prosecution entrapped uh this
0:32

gentleman who had autism by saying she
0:35

would have a relationship with this man
0:37

if he’d have a relationship with her
0:39

young daughters who are underage the
0:41

federal government charged that case
0:43

they wanted to give my client in that
0:46

case 25 years we eventually resolved the
0:49

case with a guilty plea where my client
0:52

ended up with probation at the
0:53

sentencing hearing the government was
0:55

asking the federal judge for a 25-year
0:58

sentence that we were asking for
1:00

probation ultimately in that case the
1:02

judge gave my client probation

the biggest challenges in defending a
0:06

sex crime case
0:08

are how publicity and the public views
0:13

these they’re prosecuted by taglines
0:16

these days the metoo movement made sex
0:20

crimes very difficult to defend juries
0:23

had a certain attitude looking at them
0:26

and taking the case apart involves more
0:29

than just a tagline prosecution has
0:32

taglines and logos and whatnot it’s easy
0:35

for them to prosecute these cases and
0:37

it’s difficult to defend should a case
0:40

go to a jury it’s very difficult to find
0:43

or to to do jury selection because
0:46

jurors tend to have a lot of
0:48

pre-existing Notions about why a person
0:51

finds themselves in court charged with a
0:53

sex crime and that’s my job is to tell
0:56

the story that just because they’re in
0:58

court doesn’t mean they’re guilty
